Schools & pre-schools

Schools and pre-schools in Eskilstuna are governed by two political committees. Eskilstuna Child Care and Education Committee is responsible for 43 municipal pre-schools, 19 private pre-schools, around 40 registered childminders, 28 compulsory schools and three upper secondary schools. Torshälla Town Committee is responsible for seven pre-schools and two compulsory schools.

Politicians govern pre-schools and schools through management by objectives. This means that the Swedish Parliament lays down national objectives in the Education Act and in the national curriculum and allocates grants to the municipalities.
Eskilstuna council adopts a local school plan with long-term local objectives for pre-schools and schools, and allocates a yearly budget to Torshälla Town Committee and the Child Care and Education Committee.

The committees describe their goals and objectives in an annual activity plan. The committees also decide the principles for allocating money to pre-schools and schools. Each principal or head of unit is then responsible for fulfilling the goals and objectives within the economic framework they have been given.
Compulsory schools
Eskilstuna has 30 municipal compulsory schools providing pre-school classes for six-year-olds and up to year 9. Twelve of the compulsory schools offer year 7-9. All compulsory schools with pre-school classes and up to year 6 provide child day care services such as leisure-time centres for children aged 6-9 and open leisure-time activities for children aged 10-12.
Upper secondary schools
Eskilstuna has one upper secondary school consisting of three units, Rekarnegymnasiet, Rinmangymnasiet and S:t Eskils gymnasium. All upper secondary school pupils follow a
3-year programme. There are national programmes with the same content throughout the country, specially designed programmes only available in Eskilstuna, and an individual programme for pupils that require an individual upper secondary school education, or those who do not meet the requirements of a national programme.
The three units in Eskilstuna offer 14 national programmes, six specially designed programmes and the International Baccalaureate programme (IB). All three schools offer the individual programme.
Schools for pupils with learning disabilities
Pupils who cannot attend regular school due to mental disability have the right to attend a school for pupils with learning disabilities (särskola). This can be seen as a supplement to compulsory school and upper secondary school. Schools for pupils with learning disabilities are included in the national curriculum for compulsory education, but have their own syllabuses.
In Eskilstuna, schools for pupils with learning disabilities form a separate school management area within the child care and education administration.
